What is Postmodernism?

I am honestly looking for input here. I think I have finally found a way to explore this continent I have been trying to reach. So, I want some answers to this question (the title). I know what it is I want to uncover and I know it will not be found on any wikipedia page or dictionary definition.

So please, Jon, Leif, Matt, Trev and any other readers, give me your shot from the hip answer; give me your likes and dislikes; give me your complex answers, your simple answers, and any and all other possible answers.

Off the cuff -- I think postmodernism involves coming to grips with the limits and relativities of language, recognizing the cultured nature of our premises, and grappling with the inevitable theory-laden nature of our understanding of things, all while globalization forces us more and more to find some commonality in all that diversity. But at the same time I'm not sure how "post" it is, since many postmoderns continue to go forward on a lot of modern impulses, aiming for an optimistic sort of human progress; a mastery of the conditions of the world. I tend to like postmodernism, though, especially as it relates to the language and culture aspects, forcing many to seek understanding in mutual engagement rather than colonial arrogance.
